The Transition Year class of 2017-2018 put on a fabulous production of Thoroughly Modern Millie on our brand new stage on January 24th, 25th and 26th. Click on the video below courtesy of photography by Mr. Whelan and video editing by Miss Murphy.
Millie Dillmount, played by Aoife Kavanagh arrived in 1922 New York City, only to get mugged within 10 minutes. Thankfully, Jimmy Smith (Melissa Muresan) came to her aid and recommended she move into the nearby Hotel Priscilla owned by Mrs. Meers (Sarah Egan).
Meers was no ordinary hotel proprietor though. She was secretly exploiting young orphan actresses, shipping them to the orient in return for handsome sums of money. When Millie befriended Miss Dorothy Brown (Jessica Lowe), an actress from California, this gave Meers the chance to exploit this newly arrived Orphan.
Meanwhile Millie had a grand plan; she was going to marry her boss, Trevor Graydon (Isabel Bennett). Graydon ran the “Sincere Trust” Insurance agency. Millie proved an efficient stenographer under the watchful eye of Miss Flannery (Isabella Connolly).
Millie got to meet an array of colourful characters in New York, from the poor Chinese slaves Chin Ho (Jamie-Lee Fenton) and Bun Foo (Taylor Smith) working at the hotel to the glamorous Muzzy van Hossmere (Lauren Zambra). All of these wonderful people alongside her fellow Priscilla Girls helped Millie break clean from her home in Salina Kansas and realise that “Thoroughly Modern Millie” belongs “Only in New York.”
